How are the route and line numbers chosen?
It is the type of service that determines of what order will be the number of a new route or line. métro lines have a number inferior to 10. Regular and rush hour bus routes have a number between 10 and 299, night service bus routes have a number between 350 and 399, express bus route numbers are in the 400s, while reserved lane bus routes (R-BUS) have a number between 505 and 595.

How many lines are there in the STM network?
The entire network consists of 4 métro lines, 163 daytime bus routes and 20 night service bus routes.

What are the different types of STM rapid bus services?
There are 3 types of rapid bus service:

Express The EXPRESS: a bus route having a stops zone for boarding and a stops zone for disembarking linked by a section without any stops. This kind of bus service also makes less stops than does a regular route;
 
métrobus The MÉTROBUS: A bus route with a limited stops zone that links a district to a métro station.
 
Trainbus The TRAINBUS: A bus route with a limited stops zone that links a district to a commuter train station.
 
R-Bus The R-BUS (R, for "reserved"): A bus route whose specially identified vehicles ride on reserved lanes along sidewalks or against traffic.

In Montréal, where are the lanes reserved for buses?
The lanes reserved for buses during rush hour are along Pie-IX, Newman, Henri-Bourassa and Ren�-L�vesque Boulevards; on Parc Avenue; on chemin de la C�te-des-Neiges, chemin de la C�te-de-Liesse; as well as on Sherbrooke, Crémazie, Sauvé and Papineau Streets.

How many bus stops are there within the network?
There are 8,500 bus stop panels on the aboveground network. Every panel has a distinct stop code with wich you can obtain bus schedules on our A-U-T-O-B-U-S automated telephone system. In addition, each panel gives out the following information:

  • The route number;
  • The type of service (nighttime route, métrobus, Express, R-Bus);
  • The next métro or train station on the route;
  • The periods of service of special routes (e.g. rush-hour service);
  • The International accessibility logo in cases where the stop is on a line that offers accessible service to wheelchair users.

How long is a bus stop zone?
The length of a bus stop zone is about 30 metres or 100 feet. On the sign at the end of a bus stop zone there is a pictogram indicating that it is forbidden to stop there, with times if applicable.

Why isn't there bus shelter at every bus stop?
The criteria for selecting a potential site for a bus shelter are the following:

  1. Daily On-Passenger Usage;
  2. Proximity of social service providers (hospital, CLSC, library, etc);
  3. Exposure to weather;
  4. Municipal priority.

The location of a bus shelter has to be approved by the cities and the main reasons for refusal are:

  1. The presence of public utilities such as underground gaz mains or hydro cables;
  2. The refusal of bordering owners to have their property encroached upon;
  3. Trees at too great proximity;
  4. Insufficient space.

Which are the network's longest and shortest bus routes?
The longest bus routes on the network are: the 211- Bord-du-lac (69.7 km) and the 356 - Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue (74.1 km). The shortest route is the 52 - Li�ge (2.9 km).

Which route has the most stops and which one has the least?
The route with the most stops is 68 Pierrefonds with 156 stops, while the one with the least is route 167 - Les Îles with 2 stops, between the métro and the casino, or between the métro and La Ronde.

Which route requires the most buses for morning rush hour service?
During the morning rush hour, 53 buses are required on line 535 - Du Parc/C�te-des-Neiges.
