How many people work for the STM?
The workforce of the STM is composed of about 7 300 people. Half of them work in direct contact with customers and nearly a quarter are charged with the maintenance of the vehicles and the facilities. Collective agreements govern work conditions of nearly 90% of the employees which are grouped into seven accreditation units.

What is the STM's operating budget?
The STM's 2004 budget adds up to 811.3 million dollars. Sources of income are as follows:

  • $263 million provided by the City of Montreal,
  • $387.8 million from ridership revenues and
  • $99.7 million from the Government of Québec.
  • The balance comes from various sources, such as the $59 million contribution from the Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT).

When did the STM stop managing the commuter train lines?
Since 1 January 1996, date that the AMT, namely the Agence métropolitaine de transport (Metropolitan Transportation Agency) began its operations. The AMT allocated the trains management contract to SNC-Lavalin-Gesproex. The STM had been managing the Montréal - Deux-Montagnes (CN) and Montréal - Rigaud (CP) lines since 1982.

Since when does the Corporation offer paratransit services?
The service was officially launched on 1 April 1980 and is available to City of Montreal residents with a disability. It is a reservations-based minibus and taxi transportation service. Constantly growing, the paratransit service carried out 1,350,000 trips in 2002.

When did the STM adopt its Access to Equality Plan?
In June 1987. Thanks to this plan, women now represent more than 17% of the Corporation's workforce, and ethnic and visible minorities count for 8%.

How often, on average, does a commuter use his/her CAM pass in one month?
Sixty times per month.

What is the ridership of the STM?
On an average weekday, 1,230,000 commutes are made via the STM. Of these commutes, 26% are by métro only, 40% by bus only, 32% by both bus and métro and 2% by commuter train. In 1995, the STM handled 335 million commutes.
