THE BUS NETWORK IN NUMBERS 405 million The number of passenger rides taken in 2011: an increase of more than 12% since 2006. 115 For more room and greater comfort, the new articulated buses feature enough room for 115 people compared to standard buses that can carry 75 passengers. 81.1 million The number of kilometres travelled by STM buses in 2010, equal to circling the Earth over 2000 times. 1700 The number of buses at the STM’s disposal, including 8 hybrids and 202 articulated ones. 500 km2 The area served by STM buses, or the whole island of Montréal. 213 The number of bus lines, including 160 wheelchair-accessible lines and 23 all-night lines. 119,1 The number of kilometres of reserved lanes. Now that’s fast! 10 The number of taxibus lines provided by the STM in less densely-populated areas. By 2025, all new vehicles will be powered by electricity. Back to the future With the City of Montréal leading the way, the tramway will make a comeback after more than 50 years. A 21st-century bus shelter More than 850 new bus shelters, well-lit and well-integrated into the urban landscape, will be installed. Priority for reserved lanes Reserved lanes will expand from 119,1 km to more than 350 km by 2020. Spotlight on Bus Priority Measures As a way of promoting faster service, priority measures for buses will soon be implemented. Indeed, by extending a green light, buses can cross an intersection, and by adding white priority lights, buses can get a headstart over other vehicles. The number of kilometres of reserved lanes will also more than double by 2020. The air is charged A trolleybus system will be deployed in Montréal, and new ‘midibuses’, smaller buses running silently on electricity, will prove quite useful on routes with fewer passengers and along narrow streets that would be difficult for a standard bus. Have you heard about iBus ? Buses will soon be equipped with a system making it possible to display timetables and incidents or delays in real time, at the busiest bus stops and to send that information to our web and mobile applications. A bus garage that aims for gold When you increase the number of buses, it becomes necessary to build new infrastructure to maintain them. The STM will be building a new bus garage in Saint-Laurent borough. The two-storey building will house 300 buses. Other installations are also being planned to eventually accommodate electric vehicles. The STM will spare no effort to ensure the building receives a LEED GOLD certification, one of the highest in the industry. To obtain it, the STM must not only reduce the project’s environmental impact to a minimum, the company must also ensure the sound management of resources. Construction will begin in June 2012, and the new Stinson bus garage will be operational in 2013. |
